Urban Dare Portland 2012 - 1st Overall

Recap by Jen

Thanks to Angela for the phone support, I know we can be a pain and I really do appreciate you juggling your work and our frantic calls for help.  You are the best Googler in the world!!

So we met up at Kells in downtown Portland for the start of the race.  We noticed that two other teams that we have raced with before were there, the Soup-a-Stars and Yellow Tie Racing.  We had a nice little chat about the season so far and what we had planned for the test of the year and then it was time to get started and down to business.

We were given our clues and we immediately started solving them and having Angela help solve the ones we did not know.  We solved all 12 and then I planned our route in my head and off we went.

We started at 2nd and Pine so I took us first to the Right to Dream Too Camp at 4th and Burnside for a picture. We knew exactly where that was because we had one of the residents help us take a photo of us jumping off the pole in the race last weekend.

Next we were off to the Life of Riley bar.  Again we knew exactly where that was because we had to find it in a previous race and in that race it took us forever to find!

Then it was off to Jamison Park for a 3-legged race.  We had to do a 3-legged race all the way around the perimeter of the park.  We have had to do 3-legged races before but this was definitely a long one.  Will was tearing my leg off by the end.  He always has to lead.

We left there and then it was up to On Deck sports bar.  We have started a ton of races there so again we knew where that was no problem.

From there we headed down 14th back to Burnside and spotted some rose bushes still in bloom on the side of the freeway.  Perfect.  That was the bonus.

Next we headed down Burnside to Spartacus.  One of Will and my regular hangouts, just kidding.  It is an adult kinky leather and sex clothes shop.  I guess in the spirit of Fifty Shades of Grey Kevino threw this one in.
If you look closely you can see the scantily dressed manikin in the window behind me

So from there it was off to the Pod sculpture right down the road.

From the Pod we hit O’Bryant park just a couple blocks away for a balloon challenge.  Will had to make a balloon sword or perhaps it was something else that resembled a sword but fit in better with the Fifty Shades of Grey theme.  No problem there, he did it in record time.

Next we ran up Park to the Art Museum where he had to find a horse statue and there just happened to be 3 men sipping coffee next to it.  We saw that as a perfect opportunity to get them to help us with our hear no evil see no evil speak no evil photo hunt.  We gave them each a role and they were happy to help.  It turned out that both Yellow Tie Racing and the Soup-A-Stars also came after us and used the same group for their photo.  The 3 guys were experts by the end of the day.

We also stopped in the Park and got the second half to our photo hunt, me proposing to a 70-year-old man walking his dog.  It made his day.

Then it was straight down Madison to Chapman Square and the Japanese Tai rock.  We had to find this one in another race too so as soon as I saw it was a clue, I knew exactly where it was.  We had to do a spellbound word scramble here.  We did it really quickly and then were off.

I told Will we had 2 left and one was Mill’s End Park and the other was on 5th and Oak.  In hind sight we should of probably done the one on 5th and Oak on the way out because it was pretty close to the start but now we could go down to oak (we were on 4th and Madison) and then back track to Salmon to Mill’s end or we could run down to Mill’s End on Natio and then back up to 5th. So he wanted to go down to the park first.  I didn’t think this was the best route but he took off so I had to follow.  We got our picture at Mill’s end and then had to run uphill back up to 5th and Oak.

When we got there I asked Will for the exact address because this is the one clue he looked up and told me he knew exactly where it was.  He said he didn’t know the exact address.  We were standing there in between 5th and 6th and Oak and could not find Downtown Freddie Browns.  Shoot.  I told him to look it up and get me the exact address.  He started to look it up and told me he no longer could find it anywhere and maybe he solved it incorrectly.  Oh know.  This was the last one and we couldn’t find it!!!  I started asking random people on the street if they knew and no body did.  They asked me if I meant downtown Fred Meyer.  I better not of because I know where that is and it is not close and if that is where we have to go we are toast.  I started to freak out a little bit and then called Angela.  She said there was one on NW 5th and Everett.  Okay, that is not Oak but at least I know where that one is.  The bad part about that is we ran right past that going from the camp and to Life of Riley.  Oh my gosh this could cost us.  This was at least a 10-minute mistake.    We finally make it there and get the picture and then run as fast as we can back to the start, which is on 2nd and Pine (1 block from Oak).

We were first!!  We checked our photos and were correct on all of them and got the bonus so no one could beat us. Then about 1 minute later Yellow Tie Racing comes in for second and about 7 minutes later Soup-A-Stars come in.  We went 1,2,3.  Nice job guys.
Left to Right - Yellow Tie Racing 2nd, Cougin' it Oyster Racing 1st, Soup-A-Stars 3rd

It turned out that there were 2 Downtown Freddie Browns the one we got on 5th and Everett and then the second one was on 5th and Oak but it was in the lobby of a building and you couldn’t see it from the street so when Will didn’t have an address we couldn’t find it.  Also he confessed that he was searching downtown freebies instead of downtown Freddie’s in the heat of the moment.  Now that explains it!

So once we got our award it was a rush to pick up Will's new bike wheel to replace the broken one from last weekend so he could ride to work on Monday, and then home to shower and off to the Train concert.  Another memorable busy day.
