Seattle Scavenger Dash 2012

Recap by Jen

Race number 2 of the day on Sept. 15th!

So I jumped on my bike immediately after finishing the Seattle Oyster and rode to Fuel, the start line of the Seattle Scavenger Dash to meet Josh.  It was already 12:30 and the race had started at noon so I by the time I arrived and locked my bike up it was 40 minutes into the race.  I hadn’t eaten anything since my oatmeal and Greek yogurt at 7 am and had been racing hard since 8 am.  I told Josh how sorry I was for being late and then looked at the clues.  Josh had figured them out and had a map but wasn’t sure where to find a carousel but no worries, I knew this one.  After running around Seattle all day I knew there was one down at the piers.  There were a couple of scavenger items we needed to get so we could do that along the way and I took a look at where all the checkpoints were and decided we should go down to the piers first and then make a loop back up and come around back to the finish.  Also I thought we should skip number 3 because it was the furthest out. Josh agreed and off we went to Ivar’s first.

Next it was off to the Miner’s Landing and the carousel.

Two quick ones done and it was off to the activity at pier 62.  This one was balancing a golf ball on a ping pong paddle and walking through a slalom course.  This one wasn’t too difficult but there was a long line that we had to wait in to do this.  This is a problem of starting late.  You are behind the pack and have to wait in line, a problem that Will and I try to avoid by always being out front.  Damn me being late.  So I took the opportunity to suck down a GU and then get someone to take our picture jumping off the ground.

Okay one more done while we waited.  Josh and I both did the balancing on our first try and it was off to the next task at Pike Place Market.  We had to run up to the market up a bunch of  flights of stairs and Josh asked me if I was ready to run up some stairs.  I meekly said I think I could walk some stairs.  I did take them two at a time but by this time my legs were toast.  I was going on running 10 miles and biking 18 but Josh was great about waiting for me and not making me feel bad for slowing him down.  Once we got to the market we went to a produce stand and got a brussel sprout.  One more item down.  We just needed one and I almost had to trade Josh’s phone number for it but the guy gave it to me for free in the end.  Thanks you brussel sprout man!

Notice I still have my Oyster race bib on, I didn't have a chance to take it off and my pen had exploded in my pcket in the oyster earlier  in the day.  I was looking rough.

Next we had to get a picture of one of us putting a coin in the pig.  The little kid in this picture was attacking me and telling me to go away because he wanted the pig to himself (we were there first,  I really didn’t try to push the kid off the pig, I swear).

Once we were done harassing the children we were off to 4th and Lenora to find a statue.  When we got there there was a intoxicated homeless man sitting on the statue that we needed asking the ladies to sit on his lap.  I was going to take one for the team and do it but then Josh saw we could get a photo of one of us rummaging through the statue's bag or giving it a head lock so he said he would go and get in the bag.  What a gentleman.

Next, we were off to Denny Park.  Yep that is right, the same place I started my day and the TA area for the Oyster that I just finished.  We got there and had to do a task where Josh was blindfolded and I had to direct him with my voice to pick up 4 pieces of candy randomly placed in bowls in the grass.  We worked great together and finished in no time.

Next we ran right past Will drinking beer and eating Chipotle burritos in the TA and down Westlake to the Grand Hyatt to the worst statue in Seattle.

Only two more to go.  Next we were off to Westlake Plaza Kids Walk to find a specific tile.  This one proved to be a little more difficult as no one seemed to know where the kids walk was.  Once we found it we found the tile in not too long and a nice guy offered to take our picture.

Last One!!!  We had to go to Freeway park and complete one last task.  We turned the corner to run up to the park and I thought holy hill, one last one, actually I think I said that.  So up to the top of the park and we had to complete a balloon relay.  Once we were done it was all downhill to the finish.  Thank goodness.  We finished in a total of 2:02 for 12th place overall and that was with starting almost 40 minutes late.  The winners came in in a time for 1:31 so had I not been so late we could of probably contended for the win.

So after the race I had Josh drive me and my bike back to Denny Park and I joined Will for a beer and Chipotle burrito!  He had just received our 2nd place capes from the Oyster so we drank one more shock top to toast the day.  We raced hard and had a great time.  Thanks to everyone who helped us and Josh for running the second race with this slow tired girl.  Next time we will get them!
