Scavenger Dash Portland 2012 - 1st overall

Recap by Jen

Thanks to Angela for the phone support!!!

Will and I drove home early this morning from Seattle where we completed 2 races yesterday, the Seattle Oyster and Scavenger Dash.  When we got home we grabbed some new clothes and snacks and it was off to Portland for the Portland Scavenger Dash.  After all the challenges of yesterday we were hoping today’s race would be less eventful.

When we arrived at the start, Ringler’s, I saw 4 of my old/current students.  Fun, I would be racing against them.  When it was time to start they moved us outside and told us we would get a clue to where to find our clue sheets.  The clue was to locate the baby bronze elephant and we knew that was in the North Park Blocks so we were off.  We were first to get to the statue.

Once there we had to locate a ball that matched a number written on our race bib.  Once we had it, we gave it to the volunteer in exchange for our clue sheet.

We grabbed the clue sheet and got on the phone with Angela and started solving them.  Once we had them all solved we made a plan of attack.  We could skip one clue but there were 3 mandatory clues that were all spread out so there wasn’t one clue that was truly out of the way.  There were also 2 items we needed to get others to help us with.  We decided to try to get these first. So we ran down Burnside to the market and bought a pack of gum and then rounded up two strangers to blow bubbles with us.

Then we went to the time capsule and got a picture with it.

Next, as we ran across Burnside on third  we got a pic planking at a fountain and then noticed there were a lot of people (in line for VooDoo) so we asked them to help us get our jumping off the ground picture.  It took a couple of times but we finally got it.

Next we ran down to Mill’s End Park for a photo

Then it was on to Chapman Park for a challenge.  It said it wasn’t open until 12:30 and we got there at 12:35, perfect timing.  Once there I had to direct a blindfolded Will to 5 candy bowls randomly placed in the park and he had to collect a piece of candy from each.  As we entered the park there was another team sorting out their clues.  We did this task very quickly and on our way out the other team commented on how fast we were.  Will’s reply was, “I know how to follow orders. If momma ain’t happy nobody is happy”.  Well he got half of that correct but I still think he could work on the following orders.

We were off to Pioneer Courthouse Square to snap a pic with the Beaver statue and then up to Jimmy John’s to grab a WIPE.

Next we hopped the MAX for  6 blocks up to PGE for a pic with the face statue.  We had to convince the kids to move over so we could get the picture.

Then we had to decide how to go up to Washington Park.  We could run up Burnside or Salmon or take the MAX.  We ruled the MAX out and then Will said that it would be faster to run up Salmon.  I asked him if he was sure and he said he was.  I then wanted him to double check because we have had issues with his navigation in the past.  He got made at me doubting him and insisted up Salmon was the best way.  However once we started to run up Salmon (a steep hill) he wasn’t so sure anymore and thought that we should double back and go up Burnside.  Oh my gosh!!! I just asked and now we were running 6 extra blocks.  Come on Will, this is why I asked!  So we doubled back and ran up to 24th and Burnside and then went up a trial, quite a ways uphill.  When we were in the Park Will again wasn’t sure were to go so it took us a while to figure out how to get to the Sacajawea statue.  Once we found it we did a balloon relay and then got to run downhill all the way to 11th.  We hoped to catch a bus or the street car but no luck so we had to run the whole way to the last check point Tanner Springs Park.  This was a mandatory point and way out of the way so we decided to hit it last.
Once we got our picture we were off and racing back to the finish.  We ran as hard as we could not sure where we were in relation to everyone else but when we ran through the door at Ringler’s we were first!!!  It took us 1:33 to finish and the second place team didn’t get in until 2:09 so we had plenty of time to get a burger, tots, and a beer before awards.  Finally a win for the weekend, and now it was time to go home unpack and get ready to go back to work.  What a weekend!
